Explore Trinidad Head Trail

At just over a half mile in length, Trinidad Head Trail is a scenic loop that offers some of the most striking coastal views in Northern California. Rated as easy to moderate, the trail is made up of paved sections, dirt paths, and a few stairs with points of steep elevation gain. The route circles the Trinidad Head promontory, providing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, offshore sea stacks, Trinidad Harbor, and the rocky shoreline below. Interpretive signs along the way share insights into local history, geology, and wildlife, including the former lighthouse site and the area’s maritime past.

Along the way, benches and viewpoints make it easy to stop and take in the scenery, and during whale migration seasons, hikers may spot gray whales offshore. With its short length, well-maintained path, and rewarding views, the Trinidad Head Trail is ideal for anyone looking for a memorable coastal walk without a strenuous climb.

Visit Trinidad Head Lighthouse

Trinidad Head Lighthouse is a historic beacon perched atop the Trinidad Head promontory. Established in 1871, it is one of California’s earliest lighthouses. It was built to guide ships safely along the treacherous Northern California coastline, which was notorious for shipwrecks in the 19th century. The original structure consisted of a small light tower and a keeper’s residence. The keeper would operate it manually, maintaining the light through all weather conditions.

Although it was decommissioned in the mid-20th century, the lighthouse remains a beloved landmark and is accessible via the Trinidad Head Trail. Visitors can enjoy interpretive signs detailing its history, take in panoramic views of offshore sea stacks, and learn about the role it played in Trinidad’s maritime heritage.

Experience Trinidad’s Beaches

Trinidad is surrounded by some of the most striking beaches on the North Coast, each with its own character. Below are two popular destinations.

Trinidad State Beach

Trinidad State Beach is a beautiful coastal destination known for its sharp cliffs, rocky shoreline, and long-distance ocean views. The beach offers easy access to explore the rugged rock formations, sandy coves, and sheltered tidepools teeming with marine life. While swimming is limited due to cold waters and strong currents, visitors can enjoy picnicking, birdwatching, and listening to the waves crash against the rocks.

College Cove Beach

Known for its more secluded feel, College Cove Beachis a small, picturesque location that provides a peaceful setting to enjoy the ocean without the rough surf. Visitors can explore tidepools, watch seabirds, and admire the beautiful views. Its intimate size and tranquil atmosphere make College Cove a perfect spot to take in the natural beauty of Northern California’s coast.

As the northernmost pier in the state, it offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the rugged shoreline, and the busy harbor. The pier also features the Seascape Restaurant, a popular spot for hot chowder and fresh seafood.

The harbor is a hub of activity, with fishermen bringing in fresh catches, kayakers launching for ocean adventures, and whale watching tours setting out during the migration season. It is the perfect place to see some of the current uses for the harbor, as well as to catch a glimpse of its multi-functional past.
